Foundational Policing - Report Writing, Courtroom Testimony, and Mock Trial


This course is directed towards members of law enforcement who want to master foundational skills needed to perform their sworn duties. Whether you are a new officer who has joined law enforcement in the last five years, or an experienced officer wanting to hone your foundational skills this course will provide useful tools and engage participants with policing and knowledge.


  • Understanding the importance of writing police reports;
  • Discussing best-practice methods utilized in courtroom testimony;
  • Grasping the complex criminal court process; and
  • Learn about the importance of resilience moving forward in their profession.

Complete reports and strong & articulate courtroom testimony not only lead to more convictions, but also protect each officer throughout the criminal court process. Participants will hear from experienced prosecutors who will utilize real examples from cases they have worked, and engage each participant to discuss strategies needed to be successful at work.

Imran Ali

With a passion for victim advocacy, Imran has become a prominent figure in the criminal justice profession, training judges, law students, and thousands of law enforcement professionals nationwide. Recognized for his outstanding contributions, he was named Minnesota Attorney of the Year in 2016 and 2020, solidifying his reputation as a legal luminary dedicated to upholding justice with honor and integrity.

Alexis McKim

Alexis McKim is an attorney with Eckberg Lammers' Municipal Law Group who focuses her practice on criminal prosecution. Alexis has varied history working in the criminal justice system, including work as a pre-trial service agent, a correctional officer, and a probation and parole intern. These broad and comprehensive firsthand experiences have deeply diversified her work, helping to shape her perspective on crime and inspire her approach as an advocate in criminal court proceedings.

Joe Van Thomme

Joe is a shareholder with Eckberg Lammers and an attorney in their Municipal practice area and serves as one of our lead criminal prosecutors. He focuses his practice in criminal prosecution for the Cities of Blaine, Ramsey, Woodbury, East Bethel, and Oak Park Heights. From charges and arraignment to trial, verdict and sentencing, along with contested evidentiary hearings and probation violations, he regularly handles all facets of misdemeanor prosecution for the cities they serve.

Tom Weidner

Shareholder, Attorney
Tom Weidner is a managing shareholder and attorney for the Eckberg Lammers Prosecution and Personal Injury teams. A highly-skilled negotiator and litigator with more than 30 years' experience, Tom aggressively, yet compassionately seeks justice for individuals and families reeling from serious injury or death resulting from the negligence of others.
