Learning Objectives

  • Receive an overview of scientific data supporting the need for wellness programing.
  • Learn the mindset, strategies, and tactics to develop, implement and sustain wellness programing that address physical mental and spiritual health needs of today's first responders.
  • Attendees will be exposed to helpful information on physical health including: sleep, functional movement, exercise, nutrition, disease prevention and cardiovascular health.
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of stress and trauma, begin to assess their need to improve their coping skills, and build up the six resilience factions that make a sustainable career and high quality of life possible.
  • Gain knowledge on the prevalence, risk factors and treatment options associated with chemical use and abuse.
  • Learn modalities based on best practices to treat trauma, stress and addiction.

Presenters/Speakers

Rachael Peterson, MS, LPCC, LADC, CCTP

Rachael Peterson MS LPCC LADC CCTP is a Master’s Level dual licensed clinician who has worked collectively for 26 years in public safety, through law enforcement (LE), mental health and chemical health, crisis work, training and consultation for over 20 LE agencies. During her 16 years in LE, her experiences included being a Sergeant, SWAT Team Leader, Negotiator, Critical Incident Facilitator and Peer Support Trainer. Rachael’s experience in LE has led to her passion of how trauma and addiction impacts first responders. Rachael has used her own experience as a first responder and woman in recovery to transcend into her current role of a mental/chemical health therapist and consultant working with all first responders – police, fire, military, dispatchers, front line workers and corrections officers.

Mike Goldstein

Co-Founder of Provicta, LLC
Mike is a retired 31-year law enforcement veteran who served 17 years as Public Safety Director and Police Chief for the City of Plymouth, MN. During Mike’s tenure as chief, he initiated a comprehensive health and wellness program for his department, which received national attention. Through his lecture series on leadership, health and wellness, Provicta, LLC was established to expand these vital concepts across the country to achieve the following mission: to provide a community of support for the physical and mental wellbeing of first responders. Through its technology, and training and consulting platforms provided by occupationally competent facilitators, Provicta is meeting its mission.

Max Lipset

Certified Strength and Conditioning Trainer, The Power House
In 2007, Max started working as a strength and conditioning coach, training mostly other professional and collegiate soccer players. In 2013, Max founded his own health & fitness company with his wife Jill, The Power House MN, focused on reaching a bigger population while also providing facilities and expert coaching for any level of athletic pursuit. During the past 6 years, Max and Jill have worked with dozens of public service people. For the public servant, being healthy and fit are minimum requirements to do their best work. Beyond health and fitness, controlling one’s physiology while under stress or in a stressful situation, is something that can be trained and Max is passionate about teaching these skills and techniques to public servants who need this vital skill now more than ever. With over 15 different certifications and credentials and a team of experts behind him, Max brings a multifaceted approach to human performance that is effective, efficient, and customized for each person and group he works with.

Jeremy Moe

Certified Financial Advisor with Thrivent Financial
Jeremy joined Thrivent in 2009 and the Dakota Valley Associates team in 2015. His areas of expertise include life insurance, retirement planning, asset management and education funding strategies. The financial guidance Jeremy provides will be designed exclusively for his clients to enable them to make wise financial decisions while living generously. Jeremy has a M.S., University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse and a B.S., Moorhead State University.

Kylie Ryan, RD, LD, MS

Kylie Ryan, RD, LD, MS, is a registered and licensed dietitian with a background in weight management specializing in mindful eating. Her nutrition philosophy is to prioritize overall diet quality to allow for increased food freedom. Kylie previously worked as a grocery store dietitian teaching customers the basics of grocery shopping, meal planning, and important cooking skills. She also has experience as a fitness dietitian, teaching clients how to enhance their workouts and improve body composition. Kylie has worked as an addiction and mental health dietitian where she taught clients how physical and mental health work together. Her experience allows her to work effectively with all ages and stages of life.

Kevin Coughlin

Certified Nutritionist, Performance Nutrition Group
Kevin is a Functional Nutritional Therapist who works with clients to achieve better health outcomes. Kevin has over a decade of experience in the field of Nutrition. He assesses clients on an individual basis so they can achieve their stated goals and optimize their health. Kevin works with a range of issues including digestive, weight loss, blood sugar regulation, skin, energy, and autoimmune diseases.

Dr. Paul Nystrom, M.D.

Dr. Nystrom is an emergency department physician and is a part-time police officer. Dr. Nystrom has been sharing contemporary health and wellness training with public safety personnel, primarily law enforcement, for the past 12 years. He is well-known throughout Minnesota and nationally for his lecture and training series.

Dr. Liz Klodas, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Cardiologist, Founder, Preventative Cardiology Clinic & Step One Foods
Dr. Klodas, founded Preventive Cardiology Clinic in 1999. Her clinical interests include prevention of heart disease and non-invasive cardiac imaging, specifically with the first responder population. She has authored a book for patients, “Slay the Giant: The Power of Prevention in Defeating Heart Disease,” and served as founding Editor-in-Chief of Cardiosmart.org, the patient education effort of the American College of Cardiology. She received her doctorate from the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada, and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. She then went on to complete her Cardiology fellowships with both the Mayo Graduate School and John Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dan Athmann

Certified Financial Advisor with Thrivent Financial
As a financial professional, Dan specializes in helping police officers, first responders, and their families by leveraging his combined law enforcement and financial services experience to help guide individuals and families with their protection, investment, and retirement income planning needs. Prior to his career at Thrivent, Dan’s law enforcement career spanned 25-years with the Burnsville Police Department where he worked in many capacities, finishing his career as an Investigative Sergeant in 2014.

Ashley Stiles, CSCS, ATC

Program Manger, Health Quotient powered by Twin Cities Orthopedic
Ashley started her career in healthcare as an athletic trainer at the collegiate and high school level. In 2011, Ashley joined The Power House MN to bring her skills in prevention, health and fitness to a broader audience. Ashley has been building and leading health and fitness programs for employers since that time and has managed teams of over 20 people across the country working to reduce employer’s healthcare costs, while simultaneously improving employee outcomes. Ashley believes that the culture in an organization is the key to improving health and performance. Leading a collaborative care team of physical therapists, occupational and hand therapists, ergonomics specialists, registered dieticians, board certified health coaches and advanced personal trainers, Ashley’s team is opening a new TCO location in St. Louis Park in January 2023.

Amber Peterson

Certified Health Coach and Co-Founder of Peterson & Perme Associates LLC
Amber approaches her work in organizational development with a robust and lively spirit, giving special attention to how organizational culture, professional development, and employee wellness intersect. Amber’s practical experience as a former police officer in Duluth, MN informs her knowledge and expertise in building strong teams, meaningful connections with stakeholders and community members, and a calm, deliberate approach to strategy. She has a reputation as an attentive, considerate, and dedicated professional. Amber possesses a MA in Human Development from St. Mary’s University of MN, a MA in Criminology from the University of MN – Duluth, and an AA in Law Enforcement from Fond Du Lac Tribal and Community College. She also holds a certificate in Brain-Based Coaching with the NeuroLeadership Institute and is a certified Health Coach. Amber retired from Public Safety to fulfill her true mission: to support her peers in choosing to be their healthiest, most fulfilled selves DESPITE the job. Since then, she has worked with and coached Public Safety employees to define their core values, their development goals, and strategize how to find fulfillment in life (in AND out of work!).
